Rust is Like a Joke…..You Either Get it, or You Don’t

I’m the kind of person who doesn’t get jokes. They usually have to be explained to me, and often, I still don’t get them. Rust…I get. In fact, I really “get” rust, and I get a lot of it! A friend of mine dropped by for a visit last week.  She was looking at my office and workshop, and when looking at some of my old tools, made a comment about my rusty “junk”. She didn’t use the word, “junk” in the same way that {Read More}

Halloween Memory Lane

While looking for some specific photos in my kids’ photo albums, I came across some of their Halloween costumes from when they were younger.   Some years, I spent hours making their costumes (or my mom did), and other years, I searched thrift stores to put them together.   Here’s a  little walk down my Halloween memory lane with my kids…Little Ladybug Bunny Rabbit Shepherd Clown This was MY costume that my mother made when I was a child. Talk {Read More}

Shedding a Little Light – Antique Door Backdrop and Painted Hallway

In Monday’s post, you got a look at our new home, and some of the work I have cut out for me.   I especially want to get rid of all the dark wood on the walls and doors.   This hallway is short and narrow.  It has 3 doorways – one to my room, one to another bedroom directly across from my room, and one that leads to the basement. It does have ONE thing going for it – the lovely glass doorknobs on the bedroom {Read More}

The Right Place at the Right Time

Yesterday was one of those, “I was at the right place at the right time” kind of days! I was heading to the auction house and decided to make a quick run into the Salvation Army thrift store. I had to park a block away because there is never much parking there, but halfway down the block, my radar started bleeping like crazy, when I spotted this… I expected the price to be high, but it had just arrived and hadn’t {Read More}

It’s an Illness

Hubby and I went spur-of-the-moment house shopping today. In the process of looking at the outbuildings on the property, I spotted a old wooden-handled carrying crate. It was like a beacon signaling me from the corner of the building. I rushed over, grabbed it and took it outside to ask the realtor if I could buy it. The house belonged to this realtor’s grandmother, so he could have sold it to me, but he looked a little confused and thought {Read More}

Plain Jane Gets a Makeover

There’s something so bloomin’ fun about taking a piece of furniture that was just plain boring and breathing some life into it! Such was the case with my latest project. It was so nondescript and boring when I first got it, but its shape is very sweet, so it had lots of potential. I painted it with Olympic Smokey Slate (which sounds greyish but is actually a pretty blue), then added the bird silhouette to the corner. I distressed it, {Read More}

Styling a Vintage Wedding

The daughter of some of our friends is getting married this weekend and they are using some of my vintage items to style the wedding. They are also using several of my old doors to use as tables and chairs for the bridal party. It’ll be a busy rest of the week until the wedding, as I’m also in charge of the food at the wedding.  I’ll be spending Friday night shucking corn.  I hope the weather cooperates and isn’t sweltering {Read More}

Sheet Music Dresser

I was so inspired by Miss Mustard Seed’s Sheet Music Dresser, never thinking I would actually make one like it, until I won this very similar dresser for $1 – yes, ONE dollar (and I got a head and footboard with it for that $1). This is what it looked like in my shed when I brought it home. The top was bad…really bad.  Chipped veneer, stains, not to mention the paint job. Here it is after the first coat {Read More}

Ugly Duckling Transformation

I was leaving a thrift store today, when a man walked in with this little magazine table. I asked him if he would be willing to sell it to me, rather than dropping it off for donation and he said they had just ended their yard sale and couldn’t sell it for 50 cents, so he’d be happy to!  I gave him $1 – big spender that I am. If you look at the paint job, it’s hideous.  If you {Read More}
